All vehicle manufacturers have on their products the On Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) installed. It is the standardization of electronically diagnosing any problem that a vehicle would encounter. Vehicles manufactured from 1996 to present have the OBD II. Diagnostic tools are now universal in the sense that they could be connected and used on virtually all brands of vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with a computer called the Engine Control Unit/Module (ECU or ECM). At the engine and other parts of the vehicle, sensors are installed and wired to the ECU. The sensors are constructed and calibrated in each own special way to determine or measure what is needed by the vehicle to operate properly. The ECU is programmed in a way to identify each sensor. The sensors have operating parameters being monitored by the ECU. If a sensor goes beyond those parameters the ECU generates the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for it and can be read or scanned by an OBD II tool.
To understand how the system works, let's take one example, the Coolant Temperature Sensor. When a cold engine is started, the sensor "tells" the ECU. With this information the ECU works to let the engine operate the electronic fuel injectors at higher volume. An electronic device at the throttle is triggered to act like a choke. The engine now runs at higher Revolutions per Minute (RPM) until it reaches normal operating temperature. The coolant temperature sensor at this point relays to the ECU the engine condition. The ECU then electronically adjusts the devices to operate at normal temperature. The engine now runs at the ideal fuel-to-air mixture ratio with the correct RPM.
The OBD II Diagnostics is actually for efficient engine operation and performance esp. with the help of chilton auto repair manual. The main objective of efficient operation is for emission control. From the air filter down to the exhaust system there are sensors that provide information to the ECU to control emission. The electronic system of a vehicle is very highly technical that only a diagnostic tool can pinpoint the defective part of engine operation. For those who are interested to learn how diagnostics work, there are many references on the internet as well as in Chevrolet Repair Manual. In learning about it, one will have a better idea when a car is in trouble. The OBD II of cars has standard connecting ports and there are many handheld diagnostic tools available in the market that can be used for any make of vehicle. Telstra 'Next G' has no dropouts, crystal clear reception ect. I used to be with virgin and always had dropouts, it was so annoying but they are cheap. It seems you get what you pay for with them. Another company vodafone apparently have a class action law suit against them in Australia for poor service. Seems the pommy telcos can't get it right over here. Optus itself is ok, never had a problem but I'm with telstra now and have no reason to change. There are many, many smaller telcos(AAPT, Dodo, Crazy Johns ect.) but I have never had any experience with them. I'm looking to buy a used 2006 Buick Terraza?
Anybody with an opinion...is it a good, reliable vehicle? I drive a Chevy Venture now. I test drove the Uplander but didn't like it.
My best friend and his wife bought a 2006 Buick terraza CXL.They like there SUV to a point but have several issues with it.One is the MPG numbers that are 17 city and 23 hwy.One of the other issues is the plastic interior make lots of noise while driving and when the weather gets colder it gets louder.They say the engine runs well with its 3.5 liter V-6.The other issue is the front brake rotors warp really fast and they have replaced the rotors twice in 35.000 miles.They both said they would not recommend there terraza to friends or other family members. Hidden Headlamps
Hidden headlamps are an automotive styling feature that conceals an automobile's headlamps when they are not in use. Depending on the design, the headlamps may be mounted in a housing that rotates so as to sit flush with the front end as on the Porsche 928, may retract into the hood and/or fenders as on the 19682004 Chevrolet Corvette, or may be concealed behind retractable or rotating grille panels as on the 1966 Dodge Charger.
Hidden headlamps first appeared on the Cord 810 in 1936. Each unit had a crank on its side of the dashboard, which was turned by hand when the headlamps were needed.
Powered hidden headlamps were pioneered in GM's Buick Y-Job concept car of 1938 and were used briefly on Chrysler Corporation's 1942 production DeSoto. The feature's popularity has waxed and waned over time. Hidden headlamps regained popularity in the late 1960s, particularly in the US market where aerodynamic headlamps were not permitted. A relatively large variety of cars incorporated hidden headlamps in the 1970s, '80s, and early 1990s. Currently, hidden headlamps are out of favour.
Numerous car manufacturers used hidden headlamps to get around the headlight height regulation in the United States, for instance Toyota exported their retractable headlight version of the AE86, known domestically as the Sprinter Trueno in favour of their Corolla Levin as the former had higher headlamp height, enough to satisfy US regulations rather than raise body height which affected handling.
US laws now permit aerodynamic headlamps, relative to which hidden headlamps represent added cost, weight, and complexity as well as reliability concerns as cars age. Internationalized ECE auto safety regulations have also recently incorporated pedestrian-protection provisions restricting protuberances from car bodies, making it more difficult and expensive to design compliant pop-up headlamps.
The last time pop-up headlamps appeared on a volume-production car was in 2004 when both the Lotus Esprit and C5 Corvette ended production.
