Your Own Outboard

What length and weight must my boat be to achieve 50km/h with a 39-HP outboard Diesel?
I am currently building my own boat. My plan is to find an aluminium hull, attach a 39-HP Yanmar outboard Diesel to it (available in Australia, in case you wonder if I can't spell "Yamaha" properly or got my facts wrong because yes, it really is a diesel, too), and put my own superstructure on it. It's supposed to be a commuter boat, a glider, with which I hope to cover 12km in an inlet every morning and night. It's salt water, usually calm as a lake, but can have a wind-induced chop of up to 1m at times.
I'm grappling with the question now whether I should get the smallest possible boat (3.3m) or go a bit bigger to get better planing ability (up to 6m is what I was thinking).
Thanks for your help!
The longer the waterline the faster the boat will go. Also I would go with the larger size for the times when there is a 1 meter chop.

Is this normal for a Two-Stroke outboard?
My husband and I purchased a 48 hp Evinrude a few months ago and have been doing some recent maintainence on the engine. We've noticed that when the motor starts (using a flusher of course...), large clouds of white smoke come from around the prop and lower unit. We've also noticed that after we shut off the motor, large deposits of gray sludge are collecting on the prop. The motor was running for 3-5 minutes and when we shut it off, the sludge was already pretty thick...
I know two-strokes burn oil, but I was wondering if the gray sludge collecting on the lower unit is normal and what this is coming from. The gas/oil mixture is relatively new. I've never owned an outboard before, so I just want to make sure nothing is wrong with the engine or lower unit
Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Compression is good on both cylinders. How can I test for a leak somewhere?
It sounds like you have a bad prop seal. The gray sludge is water that has entered the lower unit and mixed with the oil. Now it is coming out of the same seal it went in. Pull the drain plug for the lower unit and take a look at the oil.
Does the white smoke clear after the engine has been running for a bit? If so, it may be just a rich mixture.
