The Chevrolet Astro was a rearwheel drive minivan introduced by Chevrolet in 1985 to rival domestic (American) competitors the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager twins and the Japanese Toyota Van. Also sharing the Astros platform was its sibling, the GMC Safari. In addition to standard passenger uses, the vans were also available as cargo vans, and converters used them as the basis for small conversion vans. Both Pontiac and GMC have used the Safari nameplate (GMC is part of the Pontiac/GMC division); Pontiac used the nameplate on several of its station wagon models from 1955 through 1989. The two Safaris, both Pontiac and GMC, were on the market together (often sold by the same dealerships) from 1985 through 1989. OBD II Diagnostics and its Benefits
All vehicle manufacturers have on their products the On Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) installed. It is the standardization of electronically diagnosing any problem that a vehicle would encounter. Vehicles manufactured from 1996 to present have the OBD II. Diagnostic tools are now universal in the sense that they could be connected and used on virtually all brands of vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with a computer called the Engine Control Unit/Module (ECU or ECM). At the engine and other parts of the vehicle, sensors are installed and wired to the ECU. The sensors are constructed and calibrated in each own special way to determine or measure what is needed by the vehicle to operate properly. The ECU is programmed in a way to identify each sensor. The sensors have operating parameters being monitored by the ECU. If a sensor goes beyond those parameters the ECU generates the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for it and can be read or scanned by an OBD II tool.
To understand how the system works, let's take one example, the Coolant Temperature Sensor. When a cold engine is started, the sensor "tells" the ECU. With this information the ECU works to let the engine operate the electronic fuel injectors at higher volume. An electronic device at the throttle is triggered to act like a choke. The engine now runs at higher Revolutions per Minute (RPM) until it reaches normal operating temperature. The coolant temperature sensor at this point relays to the ECU the engine condition. The ECU then electronically adjusts the devices to operate at normal temperature. The engine now runs at the ideal fuel-to-air mixture ratio with the correct RPM.
