Chilton Transmission Book
is chilton or haynes a better manual for a transmission changeout?
my son has to change out his transmission in hhis chevy corisca...which book is easier to use?
I've had experience with BOTH manuals. For my preference, Haynes is the superior manual. Though changing out the transmission will likely be well covered in both books, I have found that Chilton typically has very poor electrical diagrams.
My friend has a Plymouth Voyager van. We had to troubleshoot and repair his fuel system. The printing on the book was SO small that we had to find a young person with GOOD eyesight to tell us what she could make out. The question was "What colors does this say?" Her answer was "OR RD, I think BR, but it could be GR". That was what we couldn't tell, whether the last color was Brown or Green. It DID make a difference.
Chilton seems to be poor that way. They tried to save money by cramming a whole diagram onto a single page where expanding the diagram over two or more pages would have been MUCH more helpful.
So I usually will order Haynes if I can't find one in the store. Another friend (do a lot of work on cars for friends) had a foreign car and I had to order the Haynes manual before I could work on her car. It took a week, but the Haynes helped me identify what was bothering her car and fix it.
