Cruiser Repair Shop My PT Cruiser is having transmission problems what to do?
Hi PT experts! I have a 2001 PT Cruiser with 161,000 miles. Have had it 4 1/2 yrs. bought at 18,000 miles. At about 100K I had many repairs to it and everything was fine until the other day. I am taking it to transmission repair shop today as only in the morning the last 3 days, it is in drive, but then acts like it is in neutral. At this point car hasn't been used for approx 10 hrs. The rest of the day it's fine. Any advice if major repair needed?
It could be a broken part inside, or it could just be worn out with that many miles on it. Especially if the fluid wasn't changed regularly according to the maintenance schedule.
Here's some advice on dealing with the transmission shop, though.
1. If they ask you to let them "go into" the transmission, or otherwise tear it down in any way, shape or form, DO NOT let them do it!! This is a tactic to get you to replace the transmission, whether it needs it or not. They will then tell you they tore into it, and it needs to be replaced, it cannot be fixed. At that point, if you decide not to do anything with it, they will have to put it back together (if they really did break into it), at which time they will charge you for the labor to tear into it, and put it back together.
2. If you take it to another shop, or already have taken it, or tell them you will take it to another shop, or even just as part of their tactic to get you to let them tear into the transmission, they will tell you that it doesn't make sense that any shop could tell what is wrong with it without being able to go inside and see what is wrong with it. They will try to reason it with you (and they can be very convincing) that it is not possible to find the problem without going into the transmission itself.
That is not true, the transmission has a computer that controls it, and will store codes. It doesn't have to set a light to store a code, and it will give the general condition of the inside of the transmission (such as clutch disc percentages). This is all that should be needed to get a general diagnosis of the transmission to decide whether or not it can be repaired, or needs to be overhauled.
Another of their favorite lines is that they're "surprised you made it into the shop with that transmission, it was so bad".
3. It may be necessary in some instances to go into the transmission to see how bad the damage is, but by that time, a good technician will usually already know that it will either need to be rebuilt, replaced, or can be repaired.
4. If they tell you it needs to be rebuilt or replaced, take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. That's true for no matter where you take it to initially, dealer, local repair shop, or dealership.
5. If you do, in fact, need a transmission to be rebuilt or replaced, go with a remanufactured unit over the rebuild. Remanufactured units are done at a separate facility under controlled conditions and all parts are checked to meet or exceed OEM specs. They should also have, at the very least, a 3 year, 36k mile warranty on the remanufactured transmission.
However, if they rebuild your transmission, it will be done in their shop, with usually only a visual inspection for damage or cracks on the gears and other hard parts, and old parts re-installed that might be fatigued. The work done on the transmission will usually only carry a 12 month, 12k mile warranty, and only on parts they replaced.
Best thing to do is take it to your local dealer. The dealership technicians are factory trained to work on your vehicle and know them very well, where trans shops and local repair shops have to work on every brand of vehicle out there, and don't know the tips, tricks, and common easy repairs for your particular vehicle.

Question about a water pump on a 1988 Cadillac Deville, front wheel drive.?
It's my father-in-laws car that I'm using while I have a new engine installed in my car. The water pump went out on it and the pulley is loose with the ballbearings falling out of it. I was wondering if I can remove it completely and replace it, separate from the water pump or does it come with the water pump when I go to buy it. I've never had to work on a front wheel drive before and the Haynes book doesn't give a good description of the repair.

Speaking from experience replacing these water pumps you are going to want to send it to a mechanic. GM left you very little room to do this job and hid a couple of the attaching bolts. They are an absolute nightmare to replace. Last time I did one of these I cut my hands up very badly. Take it to a shop after calling to get the cheapest estimate. Believe me what ever they charge it will be worth it for your sanity especially if you dont have much experience working on cars.

Haynes Repair Manual Are the Haynes Car Repair Manuals worth buying?
I have been having a lot of problems with my renault clio recently and have been tempted to buy one of these manuals, so that i can maybe deal with the problem myself. How well detailed are they and are they explained well enough for someone whos not an expereinced mechanic to fix some problems themselves?
They hav helped me work on my own cars for years, everything from CV joints to tuneups to $5 alternator rebuilds (in older cars) to electrical wiring diagrams. And have saved me a lot of trouble by keeping me from trying something that I could see was over my head. For the $16 at the store, or $25 online I have found them very worthwhile. The jacking safety and tool tips and regular vehicle maintenance tips in the front alone were worth a million dollars--what price would you put on your life? What they don't cover--transmission rebuilds and AC--take special training and expensive tools. And they prevent unpleasant surprises, like disconnecting your battery and losing the radio code, or exploding your air bag unexpectedly, when the solution is easy...
You can probably get the factory manual for your vehicle at http://eAutoRepair.com. for about $15 for a 1 month subscription that permits you to download sections or the entire manual (Careful! Mine was over 500 pages! And I forgot to set the big Library printer to print BOTH sides of the page in Page Setup!) It is valuable, and has some things that the Haynes doesn't, but the only drawback is that it is written for trained mechanics only, and won't tell you every detail like the Haynes. It is expected that you know the details already. But the information is invaluable, more than worth the small price.

where can I find a key for the symbols in the haynes electrical systems repair manuals?
I'm trying to figure out the circuits and where they run to, what fuses they go to and etc. of my car but haynes doesn't tell you what any of the symbols means in their manuals.
Online resources. Google electrical symbol key and you should be able to find them since they are industry standard symbols.
